The Steinway piano is America’s favorite and most famous piano. It is associated with quality, culture, artistry and longevity; their pianos are built to last generations. Steinways have essentially remained unchanged from the 1890s and the same models are built today as in that earlier era. On the West Coast it is not unusual to see vintage Steinways in original condition that are still very musical and used by professional musicians. When properly rebuilt they become stunning instruments.
At Ris Piano we specialize in vintage “West Coast” pianos that have been selected for tonal power, singing tone and general structural integrity. These pianos have been spared the intense temperature and humidity changes of the Midwest and East Coast, the excessive dryness of the Southwest and the high humidity of the South that prematurely age pianos, resulting in soundboard cracking, degradation of the structural integrity of the wood and deterioration of tone.
With our custom restoration process, including our modified Stanwood touch protocol, these pianos can be equal to or even superior to new pianos for a fraction of the cost – fully restored Steinways sell for approximately half the cost of a new one and receive far more attention to detail than factory prepped instruments. Considering the depreciation of a new Steinway – once it leaves the showroom it becomes a “used” piano and immediately loses 30% or more of its value, an older Steinway custom restored by a highly skilled technician offers musicians access to professional instruments at affordable prices.
